What is a miniload system?

Mar 05, 2024

A miniload refers to a type of automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) commonly used in warehouses and distribution centers. It is designed to handle small- and medium-sized items in bins or totes. The system uses a combination of automated machinery, such as stacker cranes, conveyors, and shuttle systems, to efficiently store and retrieve products from high-density storage structures.

Miniload systems typically consist of tall racks or shelving units that house multiple levels of product bins or totes. Stacker cranes, equipped with mechanical arms or forks, travel along the rows of storage structures to access and retrieve the desired bins or totes. The cranes can move vertically and horizontally within the storage system to access any location as needed.

These systems bring a higher level of automation and efficiency to warehouse operations. They can significantly reduce the amount of manual labor required for storing and retrieving products, optimize space utilization, increase picking accuracy, and improve inventory management. Miniload systems are suitable for applications where there is a need for high-density storage and efficient retrieval of a large number of small- to medium-sized items.
