What are FIFO racks?

What are FIFO racks?

Jan 16, 2024

FIFO stands for "First In, First Out," and FIFO racks are a type of storage system designed to facilitate the FIFO inventory management method. In a FIFO system, the items that enter the storage area first are also the first ones to be picked or used. FIFO racks are commonly used in warehouses, distribution centers, and other storage facilities where inventory rotation is critical, especially for perishable goods or products with expiration dates.

FIFO racks are typically designed with inclined shelves or rollers that allow gravity to assist in moving the inventory. When new items are added to the system, they are placed at one end of the rack. As items are withdrawn or consumed, the remaining inventory moves forward automatically, ensuring that the oldest stock is always accessible first.

Using FIFO racks helps ensure proper product rotation, reduces the risk of product obsolescence or spoilage, and improves inventory accuracy. It is commonly used for products with a limited shelf life, such as food, beverages, pharmaceuticals, or any other items that follow a strict first-in, first-out order.

FIFO racks can be designed in various configurations, such as gravity flow racks, drive-in rack racks ,radio shuttle rack or carton flow racks, depending on the specific requirements of the products and the storage environment.
