What types of AGVs are there?

Feb 24, 2025

AGV stands for Automated Guided Vehicle. It refers to a mobile robot that is capable of autonomously moving and navigating within an environment without human intervention. AGVs are commonly used in industrial settings for material handling and transportation tasks.

There are several types of AGVs, each designed for specific applications. Here are some common types:

  1. Tow AGVs: These AGVs are equipped with a towing mechanism to pull carts, dollies, or trailers used for transporting materials or products. They are commonly used in warehouses or manufacturing facilities for moving heavy loads.

  2. Unit Load AGVs: These AGVs are designed to handle individual unit loads, such as pallets, crates, or containers. They have load handling mechanisms, such as forks or clamps, to lift and transport the loads. Unit Load AGVs are commonly used for tasks like palletizing, depalletizing, or loading/unloading trucks and shelves.

  3. Fork AGVs: Fork AGVs are equipped with forks similar to those found on forklifts. They are used for lifting and transporting palletized loads. Fork AGVs can work in conjunction with racking systems or other automated equipment for efficient storage and retrieval operations.

  4. Guided Vehicle Systems (GVS): GVS AGVs operate on a predefined path or track, usually embedded in the floor or marked by magnetic tape or wires. These systems provide precise positioning and navigation, making them suitable for applications that require high accuracy and repeatability.

  5. Hybrid AGVs: Hybrid AGVs combine the functionalities of different AGV types. For example, they may have both towing and lifting capabilities, allowing them to handle a variety of tasks within a single system.

  6. Customized AGVs: AGVs can be customized to suit specific applications and requirements. This may involve modifications to the size, shape, load capacity, or navigation system of the AGV.

The selection of AGV type depends on the specific needs of the application, such as the type of load, space availability, required accuracy, and the desired level of automation.
