Order Picking Systems in ASRS

Order Picking Systems in ASRS

Dec 31, 2024

Order picking systems in Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) are designed to efficiently retrieve and deliver items to fulfill customer orders. ASRS is a high-density storage system that uses automated machinery, such as stacker cranes or robotic systems, to store and retrieve items from designated storage locations. Here are some order picking systems commonly used in ASRS:

1. Goods-to-Person (GTP) System: In a GTP system, items are stored in the ASRS and brought to a designated picking station where operators can fulfill customer orders. The system automatically retrieves the requested items from storage and delivers them to the operator, eliminating the need for the operator to travel to locate the items.

2. Person-to-Goods (PTG) System: In a PTG system, operators move to the storage locations where items are stored within the ASRS to pick the required items manually. The ASRS provides information on the location of the items, and the operator retrieves them using manual picking equipment, such as handheld scanners or pick carts.

3. Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs): AGVs can be used in conjunction with ASRS to transport goods between picking stations and the ASRS. AGVs can navigate autonomously and transport items from the storage system to the designated picking area for order fulfillment.

4. Pick-to-Light Systems: Pick-to-light systems use light displays and indicators to guide operators to the correct storage locations and quantities. The system illuminates the correct pick location, and the operator picks the required quantity. The system confirms the pick and prompts the operator to move to the next pick location.

5. Voice Picking Systems: Voice picking systems utilize voice commands and responses to guide operators through the picking process. The system provides verbal instructions to the operator, guiding them to the correct storage locations and quantities. The operator confirms the pick through voice commands, and the system directs them to the next pick location.

The choice of order picking system within an ASRS depends on factors such as order volume, item characteristics, operational requirements, and budget constraints. Implementing an efficient order picking system in ASRS can significantly improve order accuracy, productivity, and overall warehouse efficiency. The selection of the appropriate system should be based on a thorough analysis of the specific needs and goals of the warehouse operation.
