How does an ASRS work?

How does an ASRS work?

Jun 03, 2024

An Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) is a sophisticated system used for the automated storage and retrieval of goods within a warehouse or distribution center. It typically consists of several key components:

Storage Racks: These are the structures designed to hold the goods or inventory items. They can be either static racks or dynamic racks that facilitate movement.

Stackers: These are the machines used to handle the storage and retrieval operations. They can be in the form of cranes, robots, or other automated mechanisms. Stackers are equipped with lifting mechanisms to move vertically and horizontally within the storage system.

Conveyors or Transport Systems: ASRS often includes conveyors or transport systems to assist in the movement of goods between different areas of the warehouse. These systems help transport the items to and from the ASRS stackers.

Control System: ASRS relies on a centralized control system that manages the operations of the entire system. It coordinates the movement of stackers, tracks inventory levels, and controls the flow of goods.

The operation of an ASRS involves the following steps:

Goods are received and stored in the designated storage locations within the ASRS racks. These storage locations can be identified and tracked using barcodes, RFID tags, or other identification methods.

When an order is placed for a specific item, the ASRS control system identifies the location of the item within the system.

The stacker is directed to retrieve the item from its storage location. It moves to the specified rack, lifts the item using its lifting mechanism, and transports it to the designated retrieval point.

Once the item is retrieved, it is transported to the picking area where it is prepared for shipping or further processing.

ASRS systems offer several advantages such as increased storage density, improved accuracy and efficiency, reduced labor costs, and enhanced inventory management capabilities. They are commonly used in industries such as manufacturing, e-commerce, retail, and logistics where large-scale storage and retrieval operations are required.
